The Twin Minerals of Jade

For thousands of years, the word "Jade" was applied to any tough, green stone that could be carved into tools, weapons, and ornaments.

However, in 1863, French mineralogist Alexis Damour discovered that jade is actually composed of two entirely distinct minerals: Jadeite and Nephrite.

If you are a collector or lapidary artist, knowing the difference between jadeite and nephrite is essential for valuation and working.

1. Chemical Composition and Mineral Groups

  • Jadeite: Belongs to the pyroxene mineral group. It is rich in sodium and aluminum. Chromium impurities are responsible for the highly prized emerald-green color.
  • Nephrite: Belongs to the amphibole mineral group (specifically the tremolite-actinolite series). It is rich in calcium, magnesium, and iron.

2. Crystal Structure and Toughness

The most fascinating difference is their internal structure, which dictates how they respond to carving tools:

  • Nephrite's Microscopic Weave: Nephrite is composed of microcrystalline fibers that are tightly interwoven in a felted, carpet-like weave. This structure makes nephrite incredibly tough, allowing carvers to create thin, interlocking chains without breaking the stone.
  • Jadeite's Granular Mesh: Jadeite is made of granular, interlocking crystals. While hard, it is more brittle than nephrite and can chip more easily if carved too thin.
